If you use Manage Authors and enter what YOU want in it's Author Sort column it will persist and apply to all books by that Author for now and forever.

I found the whole 'author thing' a darn sight easier once I started doing all my single book metadata editing on the spreadsheet and I discovered Manage Authors.

I display the value of author-sort in Book Details so after entering a new author name I can glance at the Books Details to see if I approve of its value, and if I don't, I fix it via Manage Authors. If I had a keyboard shortcut or context menu item to access Manage Authors I'd wouldn't have to futz with the mouse...
