true- I usually "read" from within Mantano. ( my default reader on tablet)
if I "read" from CC , for a book that is already imported to mantano, then I see a repeat of the "importing book" process for Mantano, which is probably harmless- is that what you'd expect, for that software. I've not checked to see if that "re-import" does anything to existing bookmarks/ annotations; it does open correctly at last page read

PS I only keep a few books at at time on any reader device, so I am not that fussed about "read" indicators. the Mantano display shows me pages read + total pages for each imported book & that's all I need.

but can a Y/N read column in calibre be seen from CC when in connect to content server mode - I'd use that.
(but I don't have a Y/N to test with, I'd have to make one & populate it)

I have only a column that accepts any letter, where I use Y for past-tense read i.e. finished, i for in=progress , i.e. reading, q for quit i.e. gave up because it was crap, but keeping it in the calibre library as a reminder not to bother in future, the rest of the alphabet in reservice for if ever I invent another category
