If you want to really depend on the distro packages for software that isn't up to 5 years old (yay for LTS
) you should be running Arch or Gentoo.
Most distros do one last update when the OS version leaves testing and hits the main download page, and never update anything but the browser and security fixes.
The repos are out of date by the time you download the install iso.
