The last time Amazon stopped selling eBooks, the ability to download your purchased eBooks went away as well. If this Hatchette fight gets to the point where Amazon isn't selling Hatchette eBooks, I would not be so sure you'd be able to download any you've purchased. So yes, be prepared. Download and strip the DRM, and backup and you'll be safe.
