You mentioned Village of the Damned. This was based on The Midwich Cuckoos, by John Wyndham, who wrote several science-fiction novels, including the classic Day of the Triffids.
You also mentioned The Hunt for Red October. That was a book by Tom Clancy, who wrote a lot of similar books. Red October was the first one to feature Jack Ryan. (Most of the others have been made into films.) You might like his Patriot Games, for instance.
