I'd just order a new device and pay for next day delivery
plenty of paper books to keep me busy until the replacement arrives. Plus most people probably have access to a tablet/large-ish phone/computer to read on via the Kindle app if it was critically important to keep on reading *that* book...
Do you have two of everything (car, fridge, washing machine... actually let's make that the whole house), you know just in case something stops working
