Kobo did very well (IMHO) getting their readers in independent book stores. As I saw on my last cruise, more Kobo (by an easily noticeable amount) were in use then any other brand eInk Reader combined (from what I saw).

Sony is in no way pretty much done. Sony is determinately done since they have stopped making Readers and closed their eBook store.

B&N needs to redo their nook interface from the ground up and they need to update the hardware and get rid of the walled garden (the partitioned memory).

As far as the US goes, it's mostly between Amazon & Kobo.
