Depending on your budget (if you're willing to pay $$ for what you want), it may be worth doing some research on the Sony Digital Paper DPT-S1. Large PDF e-ink reader. Not cheap, but may be worth it depending on your usage.
Barring that, yes a tablet is next best bet and Ipad aspect ratio may be best for you.
