I can't detect any fling speed difference between V3.4.4 and V3.4.4e (N7 2012, 1200 books on the device), so I am not sure where I should be looking.
I have over 10000 books (N7 2013) and the flinging is choppy in the book list where the cover grid is very smooth and fast. But it has been eons since I used the book list so what I see may be the norm.

No I had not checked that option. Once I checked that option it worked great, exactly as I would expect without accidentally ending up somewhere I didn't intend. Don't get me wrong it still jumps to wherever I click but it is expected and flinging afterward goes smooth from exactly where I was without any jumps or surprises.

Once I turned it on I liked the feature.
