Because
  1. that was Amazon's stated reason for getting rid of it,
  2. and so far their sales have not taken a hit,
  3. and the only protestation has come from a VERY small handful of people,
  4. and because of all the people I know (including myself) who have a TTS-enabled E-ink Kindle, only two of them know it exists (the other guy doesn't use it either),
  5. and because TTS is the kind of feature people absolutely will buy a tablet for.

I am very much for Amazon's right to take away a feature that costs more for them to create than it earns them profit. Including by way of goodwill, which this doesn't particularly engender, on account of the people who know it exists are in the minority and even they mostly don't care.
