After 45 minutes on hold I was finally able to talk with a customer rep at Kobo. They said I need to send in my PayPal receipts as proof of purchase for the 2 books I bought, and the only options they will offer are either a refund or a store credit. I cannot grasp why they wouldn't prefer to simply give me access to the content I've already paid for. Their system clearly has some record of the purchases, as they're the ones who deducted the money from my PayPal account! Those transactions don't just magically happen -- Kobo's system itself initiated everything.
This will definitely be my last dealing with Kobo, which is unfortunate because they sometimes have good prices and I'd like a viable alternative to Amazon. I'll request a check if/when the Apple settlement goes through, just to save myself the hassle of going through this rigamarole again.
