I'm not sure how its more safe from scratches face down. It seems to me that tables are inherently more scratch-inducing than air.

As far as spills go, its more safe from direct spills and less safe from spills nearby. And a flat screen is more safe form spills anyhow because there are no crevices for the liquid.

I would think that the flat display makes dust less of a problem as well.

I don't know. I would much rather give the screen as much distance from the surface as possible. It's more safe being kept away from spills around it on the table, accidentally knocks across the table and things you didn't notice on the table when you put it down.
