Well on 10/18/2005 e-Ink announced they'd developed a 12 bit color film. However, it's only 400X300, 83 ppi resolution (6 inch diagonal), and they say: "Mass production of color electronic paper displays is expected to start at the end of 2006, with future plans for flexible versions."

I think I read somewhere that the refresh on the color was still pretty slow, but I can't find it again, so take that with a grain of salt.

The info is all a half-year old, anyway, with no updates that I can find on e-Ink's site, so who knows where they might be by now.
