DiapDealer in another thread gave me an idea for this fun game.
Here's how the Logical Fallacy Super Mega Quiz Game* will work:
- someone posts an argument or bit of text from an outside website (let's avoid MobileRead to avoid spotlighting someone) that contains one or more logical fallacies;
- the first person that correctly identifies the logical fallacy(ies) wins the adoration of the forum;
- the person that won posts a new bit of text containing one or more logical fallacies (again not from a MobileRead post); and
- profit.
I'll go first to demo, and I'm going to be a bit lazy by pulling from a logical fallacy quiz site. I'm also going to make this one a multiple choice quiz,
which no one else has to do if they don't want to:
Quote:
Anthony and Marie have a heated argument. During their fight, Anthony tells Marie that he hates her and wished that she would get hit by a bus. Later that evening, Anthony receives a call from a friend who tells him that Maria is in the hospital because she was struck by a bus. Anthony immediately blames himself and reasons that if he hadn't made that comment during their fight, Marie would not have been hit.

What logical fallacy has Anthony committed?
- Slippery slope?
- Post hoc ergo propter hoc?
- Ad hominem?
- Red herring?
If anyone wants to brush up on their logical fallacies,
this Wikipedia page has a full list. I'm going to admit that a lot on the list was new to me, so no one should feel bad about not recognizing some or getting a wrong answer. It's all for fun.
