The advantage that Amazon retains over B&N by keeping the ability to download the file using a browser (requiring no special reader program), is that with essentially any browser/any computer/anywhere, you can still buy new content and load it on your device to read using the usb cable.

When I'm stuck at Aunt Matilda's house for the week with no Wifi, I can still use her wired computer to buy/download/sideload new content to my reader so I don't go insane.

Now when I'm in that situation, B&N wants me to either:
1) Download, install/configure the Nook for PC program (if it will run on Aunt Matilda's computer) to get the one new book I purchased (and then uninstall it because Aunt 'Tildie is so persnickety about her computer).

2) Borrow 'Tildie's car to go to McDonalds to get the book I purchased (on her computer) using their Wifi. Which means I'll have to top-up 'Tildie's tank (again ... persnickety).

3) Go insane (possibly harming Aunt 'Tildie and making Thanksgiving dinner incredibly awkward).

B&N/Nook is clearly indicating (with this change) that they hate my Aunt Matilda and quite possibly Thanksgiving in general. I'm done with them
