Even if I push the slider all the way to the right, the font size stays at the same uncomfortably (for me) small size.

It doesn't happen with all books, and it's possible it's only happening with books that I downloaded via Overdrive from the library and then loaded using ADE. I've read through this whole thread to see if anyone else has experienced this issue, but it doesn't seem to have been raised yet.

Does anyone have any suggestions how to regain the size-changing ability?
Like DNSB said, there are some books that have a fontsize predefined in the .css of that book, that is not to blame on the e-reader or firmware.
Some books have it,and you have stumbled to the one it has.
With pre defined font sizes in an ebook, the slider to make it smaller or bigger is overruled.
( I hate those books ! )
With calibre you can convert the book and get rid of the pre defined fonts.
(look and behave section, I insert there the input of the Amasis font in stead of the used font and adjust the fontsize there .)
Just do a epub-epub conversion ( or kepub- kepub)
Making it very easy said (there are a lot of technical rules that override it or say it more accurate, i just keep it very general just to explain what happens) an ebook exist out of several html files, an index, and a css file that defines how the book will look like, all the html files and needed other files like fonts and pictures are in it,then it is zipped and renamed to epub to handle it as one file.

As example in the html file is a tag to font 12 to use in the entire book.
In the css file there is a rule for font 12 say, it have 12 pts size, and it is italic.
As result, you see on the reader that part in italic, with the pre-defined font size.
But how bigger screen and resolution are, the more smaller the 12 pts size become.
Some books don't even have a .css file, then the size of the font is allso named in the html file.
By converting the file in calibre you can set a bigger font size,or removing font or value at all, then the slider works.
Or you can download Sigil, open the epub, look what font is defined in the html files, then go to the .css file (or html file) and change or remove the font size of the used font there.
Both converting,or editing the epub/kepub is only possible if the DRM protection is removed (watermarked books mostly don't have DRM protection) ,there are plugins for calibre that removes DRM, there are programs that can do it, search on Google for it, but I don't think it is ok to give the names of the programs here in public (I can do it by pm.)
Calibre also has a build in editor simular to Sigil,so you can use only one program to handle both. (And it is very handy of building a catalogue of all the books you have, and can be used to send the books to your reader and much more.)
