Since you seem to be using a Kobo reader: You can save yourself a lot of work making fonts bolder by installing the "Freedom to advanced font control" patch from the many nice patches provided by GeoffR here.

It allows you to control font weight on the reader for sideloaded fonts just like for the original ones. It seems they have to be True Type fonts though.

Here's my version of the original Alegreya. All I did was use Type Light to check that the internal font names match the external ones (which used to be important for Kobos to correctly display bold and italic fonts, not sure if that has been fixed by now...) and convert the otf fonts to TT curves. Looks very nice on my Aura HD.
