Forget the Kindle. Amazon fanboys will always tell you just how easy it is to take all the extra steps needed so that you can read non-Amazon books on a Kindle, but it's never as easy as taking no extra steps.

I'd suggest picking up a Sony here because the Sony has the easiest integration with the public library, allowing you to borrow books from the reader itself and requiring no extra steps and loading the borrowed book directly into the reader. Kindle is not supported in Canadian libraries, so, unless you want to pay for all the non-public domain books you read, the Kindle is a terrible choice for a Canadian. Kobo should probably be your second choice. I've only played with those a bit and prefer my Sony, but it should work reasonably well. According to the instructions from the Toronto Public Library, borrowing books on a Kobo requires that you first download them to your computer and then transfer them to the Kobo reader.
As for PDFs, on the small screens you find on these readers, none of them are going to be a lot of fun to read. I'd suggest getting ePubs from the library here on MobileRead, from Project Gutenburg, and the public library if you want free books.
Now, if you've got a pile of money and want to pay for every book, a Kindle will do just fine.
