Some stuff he cut stayed cut (according to the forward in the extended version) but some stuff was restored as he felt it added to the story. That's pretty much a personal judgement call though I think as to which is better.

yeah, that was the impression I got, so I decided to go with the convenient option, which was the book I already had! If I enjoy it enough I'll maybe read the other version eventually.
