The Iron Heel was a departure from London's writings about what he knew and ventures into what he thought. Many critics have noted that this is the first exposition of London's socialist views coming several years before the Russian revolution (see
Ten Days That Shook the World by John Reed.)
It predates
1984 by decades and describes how the world got to the state that
1984 describes. There are also many parallels to Gilette's work and to the current political situation in the US.
