Once you ask the M96 to update, whether from local storage, or from the cloud, it copies the update.zip file to /cache & then reboots into recovery to flash the file.

If this is resulting in the same version being reported, you could boot into recovery, format /cache & then try to update again. Also delete any update.zip files in local storage & SD card. A factory reset might also help.

If everything else fails, boot into recovery & manually specify the file from SD card to flash.
