I gave the static ip a try hawhill.
The method I used.
Editing Network Connections. That's what it's called in Gnome Classic.

Under IPv4 from Automatic DHCP to Manual and entering the ip and netmask. I got Putty with a login request, which, as root worked, and entered the mario password which failed.
Then i tried to use the online password calculator but found I couldn't get to any website in Firefox. Just my modem/router. I set IPv4 back to Automatic DHCP which seems to of solved the problem.
Seems quite an awkward method but doable I guess. Just got to get my password now.
