Adobe Digital Editions is needed to download DRM-protected ebooks from Kobo. There has been some discussion about new DRM with newer versions of Digital Editions (the Adobe site only has links to 3.0 and 4.0) and problems it might cause, but here is a direct link to Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 at the Adobe site.

If you're willing to remove the DRM, the books can be used with any device or app that supports epub. They are also then easily converted to Kindle format using Calibre.

DRM removal can only be obliquely discussed at MobileRead, but information can be found by Googling "Apprentice Alf". I will say, though, that the means to remove DRM can be added right to Calibre and if you're comfortable using computers, getting everything set up isn't particularly challenging.

Here are a few Kobo books that are always free, so you can try converting them to your Kindle or finding another satisfactory way to read them. I hope you can find a process that works for you.

Here are a few that are perpetually free and can be downloaded with Adobe DRM.

Paradise Lost

Update: If you do indeed have a Kindle Fire and don't want to remove the DRM, here is a link to instructions for installing Bluefire Reader on your Kindle Fire. Bluefire will read epubs with Adobe DRM.
