Thanks David. Thanks all who have given me feedback.
I felt my first step was to at least hear whether others had experienced anything similar — devices being what they are, it's not always easy to tell what level of "quirks" is to be expected (and, I guess, put up with). $220 is not a cheap device by my standards, but I guess to other people it might seem that it is, and maybe I shouldn't set my expectations too high.
Anyway. Given today's feedback, I contacted Kobo again — on the number for the local Kobo distributor, so was stonkered to get a call back *from Canada* !! (I guess I have Skype and the like to thank for that?) The device is still under warranty, so I didn't want to blow that option while it's still available. The rep was actually really responsive and on-the-ball — insisted we do a factory reset as a first step, but I guess that's part of the script — and now it's up for escalated attention. I don't mind that, if it gets fixed or replaced ... and if at least it means no-one's going to come back and say, "you opened it, you broke it!"
(Oh, and in registering the device after the reformat it installed 3.8.0 via the desktop, so I guess the firmware release has made it to Oz.)
