The German method of opening and closing direct speech spanning more than one paragraph only once makes sense and seems logical.
Re-opening the same direct speech at the start of a new paragraph just makes it look like the closing quotation mark is missing at the end of the preceding paragraph - even though this is "correct" in English.

I'd guess this comes down to what you are used to.
