I switched to Mint from the mainline (gnome)Ubuntu because of UNITY (and other bloat). Mint
feels cleaner.

My main desktop machine is still on XP because some things don't have a Linux version (or alternate I like), or run-integrate under Wine.
There are other problems lurking:
My Wife and I were discussing what to do about her computer if it dies:
She has a expensive Embroidery machine that can't USB connect except with a 32bit Windows machine. The workaround is 512MB (max) SDcards in a PCMCIA adapter 512MB max
