Last I read, the Fire HDX is not able to be rooted. I have two 2012 Fire HD tablets that are rooted, but last I read, an update prevented unrooted 2012 HD's from being rooted. The Fire OS on the 2013 Fire HD was also unable to be rooted, unless something has changed.

In my opinion the best tablet to get is the Nexus 7 2013, or wait for the next one.

Price wise, now is a GREAT time to get the 2013 Nexus 7.
