Well they certainly have a perceived sturdiness due to their metal casings, but as far as there being a tangible increase in durability vs the plastic readers I don't know. It's not like there are a rash of complaints on the plastic cased devices and plastic is often stronger than many give it credit for, it's just often perceived as cheap or not sturdy/durable.
