At this point, I would let Windows do what it wants. It will only format the visible portion of the drive. Make sure it formats the partition as FAT32. After that, run the Kobo desktop and let it do its thing. When you disconnect, it should be OK. Then connect again and see what happens. If there is a problem at this point, take it back and get a replacement.
