Would this idea be any easier? I was thinking that code could be written to fix the filenames with spaces by replacing the space with an underscore before any of the other routines are run and then the rest of the code can work on the ePub without this bug cropping up as the affected filenames will have been fixed. The filenames would have to be fixed wherever they are found. and if a %20 is in place of a space, it too would have to be fixed. if this isn't something you want to do or feel you can do, we'll either have to wait for Kiwi to return or someone else to take on the job.
