I could be wrong, but I've always had the sense that the original purpose of the ebook-viewer in Calibre was just to preview the files before sending them to a device for actual reading (which is what I always use it for -- checking the result of a conversion). It's quite bare bones from the perspective of a user who wants to use it as their actual reading application.
