Here's what I'd like to see -- both for the irony and the effect: An iPhone that rediscovered the removable battery.

At this point, too many Android phones use non-removable batteries. The LG G3 is an exception, and Samsung devices are legendary for their open-box hardware, but Samsung has also implemented some nasty software-firmware limitations that undercut the benefits of their hardware design.

Wouldn't you love it if Apple's next so-called innovation was to bring back the battery access they chose to disallow?

I'm waiting to see whether the last Mac Pro's disappointing sales finally convince Apple that most professional artists, musicians and film people refuse to invest in hardware that can't be opened and updated. The day Apple figures that out will be the day that nearly every conversation I have with a professional in the arts doesn't begin with the words, "Have you thought about buying a PC?" MacBook Pros with Retina are having that effect as well.

I won't be buying an iPhone 6 because of the locked-down hardware, but it's to Apple's credit (in terms of design and integration) that I pause each year to consider the possibility.
