I think it's a pretty unreasonable judgment. The watch is configurable in lots of different ways, many of which are attractive. It might not be to your taste (watches are, traditionally, very personal objects—more so than computers), but it nevertheless has an aesthetic which isn't without elegance. The fact that it can be dressed up to wear with a suit while also being appropriate for wearing to the gym just by switching out the band is impressive. And the whole, "I can't believe apple would release that" line is just an eye-roller.
