Not all files at archive.org are google scans. In fact I am not even sure any of the google scans landed there.
Mostly these are files uploaded by individuals (I suspect to be internal competitions who scans more books), that fed a page scanner with a book and let it do automatically the job of scanning and OCRing it. And automatic means bad. I had very bad experiences with archive and books. It's better to get the PDF (there will always be an PDF there) rather than the ePub.
Nevertheless, I would check the epub in calibre to see what's happening.
