No, it probably wont be any more protective than an Apple smartcover. Its subject to the same movement etc, and potentially could turn on the ipad in his bag. To be honest I really can't think of too many covers that will do the job properly and effectively for a schoolboy. Like the apple Smart Cover, its attached with a very similar connecting piece, and is easily detached. I usually carry that all inside a neoprene zippered slipcase, if I am taking it away from home in my shoulder bag.
