I tried to read The Lies Of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, it was so underwhelming I gave up after 20 pages. I hope to retry it some day. I've not given up the genre yet.

LotR was and will remain one of the books that started the genre in the modern sense. It's not the only one mind you, just the most famous one.
In the 80s you had all these Tolkien copy cats, or followers, however you want to call them. But things have evolved drastically in this genre and Tolkien tradition is just in line with one branch of fantasy.
