Well .. not really. The stories are self-contained. While I always prefer to read any series in order, I don't think it's really necessary.

GA Russell, another series that you might be interested in for future gift-giving is Betsy-Tacy, by Maud Hart Lovelace. These follow friends from childhood to young adulthood, with the reading level also reflecting the progression in age.
