Followup - deleted Marvin from the Ipad and reinstalled. Appears to have cleared the corruption. Bit of an overkill since I now have to reload 1875 books, but that hopefully helps confirm it's an Ipad 2 issue
The Iphone is still well & good. OH yea, OS X 10.9.4, IOS latest releases.
