That's fine. I just think it is erroneous to extend that usage analysis to the rest of the world. Kovid has to think of calibre users everywhere, and I doubt XP users make enough of a dent to make it worth his time.

As a student, I don't like spending money either. In fact, I refuse to pay Microsoft for XP either, and run linux. calibre 2.x runs great on my 10-year-old laptop running Arch Linux.
