I did a little test.
  • First I deleted Gothic and Ryumin. I hoped that the only Chinese font on my device NotoSansHans-Regular.otf will be picked up for the library view, but this did not happen (even after opening a book).
  • Next I deleted all fonts from the system partition. As expected the result was that the whole user interface showed only squares. After opening a book and selecting NotoSansHans-Regular.otf, the user interface showed again characters, but not characters of NotoSansHans-Regular.otf, but of FairyDustB.ttf (a font with very limited range that I installed for test purposes at some point). Tibetan and Sanskrit are displayed as squares.
  • Next I deleted all user fonts apart from NotoSansHans-Regular.otf. After opening a book and selecting the font, the user interface used NotoSansHans-Regular.otf. Chinese titles in the library view are displayed correctly.
  • Next I added my Tibetan and Sanskrit font (both font names start with letters higher than "N"). After opening a book, Tibetan, Sanskrit, Chinese book titles are displayed correctly in the library view.
Strange side effect: If I select "Library" from the Home screen, I get a full screen menu showing Books, Previews, My Collections, Articles from Pocket. The other menus behave as usual.

Edit: I installed Gandhari Unicode.ttf. Chinese titles are not displayed at all in the library, but the Greek letters are now ok. Tibetan and Sanskrit is still displayed correctly. The "Library" menu works again as usual.
It looks like some fonts claim to cover more characters as they actually do, and by doing so they prevent the software from searching for alternative fonts.
