Sorry, did everything I could, without making it work...

I took all the fonts away from the "user" font folder. Reboot.
Put only the font for simplified chinese (code2K first, then redone the same process with another asian ttf)
Opened a book.
Changed to the user font.
Tried to view the notes.
Library view = No, still with squares
Reboot
Library view = No, still with squares

I guess the internal font "thinks" it works with the square (as opposed to the fonts displaying double crossed square). Therefore it refuses to be superceeded by a user font in the library view, and in the popupnotes...
