I think that's why so many old SF books had pictures of rockets and such on the cover. An interesting cover will intrigue a potential reader so that they at least look at what is on offer. It's probably the basis for TV 'trailers' of up coming movies too I'd guess. Sometimes the trailers mislead you a little bit on what the story line is but I think they have to if they are to catch interest without giving away the plot.
