The problem seems to be that the device automatically selects the fonts for the library view. If there are several fonts that provide a certain character range, the device selects one of them. But unfortunately the selected font may not support each and every character of the range. Compare the two screen shots. The first image shows the library view after powering the device on. The characters of the first two titles are outside of the range supported by any of the three system fonts. The fifth title contains characters that are in the range of Gothic MB101 (one of the three system fonts), but one character is not really supported.
The second picture shows the library view, after I have opened the first two books and selected the appropriate fonts. Since they are now available to the system they are used in the library view.
The work around, I guess, consists of two points. 1) Remove all fonts that support the range you are interested in apart from the one you want to use. 2) make this font available to the system by opening a book that uses it. However, this does not seem very convenient.
