That I read as "let's throw mud on the wall and see what sticks." The books may not have been the reason, but they sure as hell are trying to bring them into the investigation. They cannot afford to go on public record stating that the books are irrelevant. But then:

Have to wait and see what happens if and when real charges are being brought up.
It is entirely possible that the story about the books came from the teacher's camp, not from law enforcement. How better to discredit the investigation than to make it look like the guy is being persecuted for exercising his First Amendment rights? After all, consider who gains from the leak of the initial inflammatory story. It's not the government, it's the teacher, who gets to be portrayed as a victim.
