That I read as "let's throw mud on the wall and see what sticks." The books may not have been the reason, but they sure as hell are trying to bring them into the investigation. They cannot afford to go on public record stating that the books are irrelevant. But then:
Then why did they leak it in the first place? Oh, right, because they were so concerned and decided to be more forthcoming. Question is though, did they have the right to do so or not? And why? Let some reporter make the connection to the books, so that the cat is out of the sack. Very convenient as now they can make statements about the books saying they were not the main reason, but still got relevance. Pretty clever to bring in the books that way.
Have to wait and see what happens if and when real charges are being brought up.

It is entirely possible that the story about the books came from the teacher's camp, not from law enforcement. How better to discredit the investigation than to make it look like the guy is being persecuted for exercising his First Amendment rights? After all, consider who gains from the leak of the initial inflammatory story. It's not the government, it's the teacher, who gets to be portrayed as a victim.
