I've always had sleep covers on mine and I've had zero problems with any battery drain. I also never shut the light off, I let the sleep cover shut it off so it comes back on as soon as I open the cover to read again.
If your sleep cover isn't working and leaving the light on, it's easy enough to see, just go into a dark room or closet and look at the edges of the cover. Or when you open it, you'll always see the light off and then turning on as another way to check it.
I'd bet anything it's leaving the wifi on and nightly syncing though and not a problem with the sleep cover.

Mine wasn't behaving like that at all. I never have wifi on (we've got limited download as on a mobile signal) and only ever sync once in a blue moon. My light was always on when I went to bed in case I wanted to pick up and read if I woke in the wee hours. I would close the sleep cover (kobo branded) and there would be no light escaping from the cover so I assumed that the device was asleep. However, when going back to it the next morning the battery would be completely drained. I then started to put the unit to sleep using the power button and still had the same problem. Took it out of its case et voila, problem solved! I've gone from charging the e-reader 3-4 times a week to once a week and, if anything, I'm now reading more because the problems I was having have ended.
