I second a lot of the suggestions already made. Some new suggestions:
Interstellar Pig by William Sleator - sci-fi thriller (

Joan Aiken's books, especially the Wolves of Willoughby Chase series - historical adventure (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_A...ves_Chronicles )
Andre Norton's Time Traders series - sci-fi adventure. (

Jane Yolen's books are generally a good bet, but depending on the book might be a bit young. On the other hand, I still reread her stuff. (

Avi generally writes good historical YA fiction. (

Bruce Coville's books, especially the Rod Albright series and My Teacher series - sci-fi adventure (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Coville )
Madeleine L'Engle - more thoughtful YA books, the first one is

Alexander Lloyd's another great YA author. Try the Chronicles of Prydain - great fantasy series (

Definitely wouldn't recommend the Hunger Games. I had friends who were triggered by it.
I hated The Dark Is Rising as a teenager. The 'heroes' go around mind-raping people and generally being creepy. I kept thinking they were going to face consequences, but they never really did and I wasn't OK with that.
