On Surface Pro 2, I rarely detach the cover. It folds back perfectly and doesn't get in the way.
Even when using OneNote, I simply fold back the cover and lay the tablet on the table.
But I agree: Attaching the pen magnetically on Surface Pro 2 had been way more convenient.
