@kovid: I already had 2.1 installed on main rig by the time I saw your message. I checked my backup machine. There is no asterisk at the bottom of the calibre main window. On the left it says "calibre 2.0 [64bit] created by Kovid Goyal". On the right it says "Update found: 2.1.0". No asterisk that I can see.

Update. I downloaded with Chrome from Fosshub. The download was much slower than normal. Slow enough that these two strange occurrences led me to run a Malwarebytes scan as a precaution. Malwarebytes came back clean.

Now running 2.1 on my main rig. Will wait a bit to update the backup.
Now I suspect that Firefox caches popular downloads to a server somewhere.
