Check out videohelp.com for an extensive list of DVD players with notes on which ones are region free, "VCR Friendly" (no Macrovision or it can be turned off), or have hidden menus or secret codes to temporarily or permanently disable region codes.

There's software to make computers ignore region codes or your DVD drive may have a firmware that's been modified to disable it.

AFAIK, New Zealand still bans the sale of any DVD player or computer drive that is NOT region free.
