Maybe a "rmmod lowmem" would work, too? BTW, what is the lowmem driver? Kind of a sophisticated OOM-Killer?
That said, 56MByte for a font is probably too large to be useful on a device like this. Always depending a bit on how that font is accessed or resident in memory, though. But it's quite certainly the reason why things get unstable.
